THE FIRM
A firm built around one kind of problem.
Mercurian Equity is a Perth based private capital firm investing in the Australian lower middle market.
We take control and structured positions in established businesses where the limit on value is structural rather than commercial: capital structure, key person concentration, financial opacity, or the absence of the delivery and compliance infrastructure a sector requires before it can scale.
These are businesses with real revenue and defensible market positions that are not yet institutionally investable. They are systematically underpriced, because most capital is not equipped to fix them.
We manage capital for wholesale and sophisticated investors who want to invest directly in Australian small and medium enterprises.
OUR STANDARD
Every thesis is argued against before it is funded.
We name the constraint that actually binds rather than the one the sector talks about. We test the operator's balance sheet before we test the opportunity. And we decline more than we pursue.
Our investors should expect a clear account of what we are underwriting, what would have to be true for it to work, and what we have chosen not to do.
Mercurian intends to be known in this market for judgement that holds up under scrutiny, and for returns earned through preparation rather than pricing.
DISCLOSURE
We do not publish our holdings. We do publish our reasoning.
Portfolio detail stays between us, the operators we back and our investors. A business partway through a capital structure change or a management transition does not benefit from that being public, and neither does a vendor still deciding whether to sell. Discretion is a condition of the work rather than a preference.
What is public is the analysis. Every issue sets out a sector thesis in full: what we think the binding constraint is, what the sector believes instead, what evidence supports each position, and what would have to change for our view to be wrong. Sources are named so the numbers can be checked.
That is the material we would rather be assessed on. It is harder to write than a portfolio page and considerably harder to fake.
Mercurian Equity Pty Ltd (ACN 686 602 022) is a Corporate Authorised Representative (No. 1316987) of Providence Equity Holdings Pty Ltd (ACN 612 005 928, AFSL 487419).
Senior Leadership & Advisory Board

Stephen Chipfunde
Managing Principal
Stephen sets the investment framework and runs the firm. His background is operational rather than transactional: chemical engineering, then corporate strategy and operations improvement across Australian businesses, which is the discipline the thesis actually requires. Identifying that a business is constrained is straightforward. Establishing whether the constraint can be removed inside a hold period is an operating judgement.
He holds an MBA in Strategy and Finance from Curtin Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) from Curtin University, completed executive education in finance at the Wharton School, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Lincoln Pan
Advisory Board Member
Lincoln advises the firm on strategy. He is an accountant by training and an operator by practice, having built and run businesses through more than a decade in the financial sector. That combination bears directly on the second and third constraints we work on: a fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants understands what it takes to reconstruct three years of financials to a defensible number, and an owner-operator understands what it costs to build a management layer beneath a founder, because they have done it.
He also brings a business network through the Asia Pacific region, relevant where a Western Australian business has customers, suppliers or capital sources offshore.
Lincoln holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance and an MBA in Finance and Leadership from the University of Western Australia, completed executive education at Harvard Business School, is a fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Hao Zeng
Advisory Board Member
Hao's background is capital markets services for real estate and mining companies with large equity portfolios. Relevant here for one reason: the sectors we work in are asset-heavy, and valuing a business whose value sits substantially in what it owns is a different exercise to valuing one whose value sits in what it earns.
He holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Graduate Certificate of Commerce from the University of Queensland.

Hector Wu
Advisory Board Member
Hector's specialisation is corporate governance and risk management, which is directly load bearing for a firm whose thesis is that missing compliance and delivery infrastructure is what makes an otherwise sound business unfundable. He advises on how that gap is identified and closed.
He holds a Master of Professional Accounting from the Australian National University and a Master of International Business from the University of Wollongong, and is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA).
